Nelle antiche civiltà come l'Egitto e la Mesopotamia, i pigmenti blu erano molto apprezzati e spesso associati alla divinità e alla regalità. Durante il Medioevo, i pigmenti blu erano costosi e rari, spesso riservati agli abiti della Vergine Maria e ad altre figure sante nell'arte cristiana. Il celeste continuò ad essere associato alla spiritualità e alla purezza durante questo periodo.

During the Middle Ages, blue pigments were expensive and rare, often reserved for the garments of the Virgin Mary and other holy figures in Christian art. Light blue continued to be associated with spirituality and purity during this time.
